The company
Capgemini was born in its current form in 2004 after a series of acquisitions. It was born in Paris in 1967 as Sogeti, and it soon acquired two companies, CAP and Gemini. In 2000 the company acquired Ernst & Young Consulting, and in 2002 it re-launched its Sogeti brand. Sogeti is now Capgemini’s subsidiary, a Brussels-headquartered company focused on delivering IT services adapted to local requirements in terms of infrastructure, applications and engineering.
With 75,000 employees in 30 countries around the world, Capgemini is the largest supplier of information services in Europe. The acquisition of Ernst & Young Consulting provided a strong foothold in North America. After financial hardships in the first half of this decade, Capgemini is recovering and fortifying its position in India and North America.
Careers at Capgemini
One of Capgemini’s many strengths is its culture. Many employees report friendly atmosphere and approachable and supportive co-workers. The hours are not as long as in most other consultancies, and the company aims at having everyone in the office on Friday – opposed to staying at the client’s site the whole week. With weekends free and night shifts rare, Capgemini’s work/life balance resembles working in industry.
Although technology-based, Capgemini’s work tends to be diverse and exciting and isn’t confined to SAP implementations and similar work that other IT consultancies thrive on.
Capgemini’s organisational structure
Capgemini divides its services into four disciplines: Consulting Services, Technology Services, Outsourcing Services, and Local Professional Services. Roles are standard: Analyst Consultant and Consultant for graduates and young professionals, and Senior Consultant, Managing Consultant and Principal Consultant for experienced hires.
Capgemini’s five sectors of activity are: Public Sector; Energy & Utilities; Banking, Finance & Insurance; Manufacturing, Retail & Distribution, and Telecommunications, Media & Entertainment.
The perspective
Capgemini is strong in the Public Sector, is pushing into Oil and strengthening its Financial Services capabilities. Capgemini is a strong brand, especially in Europe and it is working on getting stronger. It is a company it feels good working for, one that’s involved with its employees from the beginning. While pay rises and promotions are not that fast, Capgemini trains its people well and opens the opportunity to work with high-profile clients. It aspires to become more recognized in strategy and operations fields.
